Self-development: How to use your personal content to raise your relevance and value

On a personal note, what you consume is your content. The consumption line feeds your character, boosts your knowledge and stores up viable experience that help build your confidence and strengthen your personality in an increasingly competitive world where organizations compete for talent.

Meanwhile what you consume is what you consistently interact with. Renown business founders consume valuable books daily. They build a network of brilliant minds. They attend knowledge-based seminars and undertake projects that – whether they fail or succeed at them – build them up. These put them in good stead to face the future armed with rich experience from which they dig to tackle challenges that surface later.

Business managers too are valued for their exposure. That includes where they have been, which new knowledge they have added lately; the challenges they have tackled successfully, and the network that sustains their rise.

It does mean your worth as business manager or founder is tucked in you. It is not really the money-in-the-bank. Also, it has very little to do with your physique since you are not contesting at the Smack-Down, or waiting as Bouncers in a highbrow restaurant.

What you build inside is what creates the wealth outside. This will determine your income as a Business Manager or a tough founder that builds lasting empires.

‘Shark’ investor, and owner of NBA’s Dallas Maverick, Mark Cuban, says great business people don’t go after amassing wealth they simply focus on building themselves until the personality they have built overtime naturally attracts its great worth.

He puts it this way, “Focus on building the best possible business; if you are great, people will notice and opportunities will appear”.

Here is the nugget. The secret of your lifelong value is what you do daily. The greatest investment guru, Warren Buffet, still reads avidly everyday. When asked about his secret, he replied that he consumes about 500-pages of books everyday. That is what he consumes. Little wonder he knows the bumps and curves of stocks.

It was revealed by Forbes in 2012 that famous basketball player, Micheal Jordan, used to practice 4-5 hours daily. That is his consumption line. As well Steve Jobs and Bill Gates stayed with motherboards and keyboards for years to lead a bold new digital world.

Former Pepsico CEO, Indra Nooyi, racked up a rich experience to lead the former soft-drink business into diverse markets that put the company ahead of rival Coca Cola and future-proof its business model. She spent two decades at Pepsico to enrich her understanding of the business before she could see that far.

If a business manager or founder can’t project 6-months ahead of his or her industry, he or she is closer to disaster than anyone else. But it takes consistent feeding of the mind to rise above the haze of the market and view with shrewd vision months and years ahead.

To raise your value, the formula is to daily consume what will strengthen your profile. It involves:

a. Undertake new challenges – Whether you fail or succeed it will raise your stock experience-wise. That is how you gain mastery over tough challenges as a manager or business owner later in life. It is like saying, “Come on, I have been here before, folks – I know the way!

b. Read or rehearse avidly – Vision and confidence are built from mental depth and physical balance. Like Buffet, commit to reading to open your mind to rear possibility and brushing out stale experience and traditions that serve as a block to greater achievements.

c. Build an impactful positive network – Your network is your networth. Your highest value is locked in the closest person to you. That is the key. If that person is mentally poor, and wallet-dry, you are not safe!
