Business takeaway from Gov. Cuomo broadcast today: ‘Hard times make us better’

Date:

New York state Governor, Andrew Cuomo, subtly provided key leadership and business insights that may help business managers who have been following his latest broadcasts.

The state may be at the centre of the COVID-19 pandemic but Andrew Cuomo is pulling every string to bring psychological relief to the 19.45 million citizens. His mastery of facts and trademark boardroom presentation-style make him a rare breed among politicians. Generations of Yankees would be glad they had such a man at the helms of affair during their darkest moment.

As had become customary in the past couple of weeks, the Governor held his daily broadcast earlier today to feed the media about the state’s latest efforts. He said though the number of death is in decline, it is not yet time to loose the restrictions.

Noting the staggering losses of lives and impact on the economy, he admitted the present realities are the stuffs that help forge outstanding characters.

Emphasizing how tough times can serve as a character builder, Cuomo explained during the broadcast, “It is the hard times in life that makes us better”.

“Tragic situations form character”, he added.

Projecting into the immediate future, the Governor enthused that New York state will come of the crisis stronger. By implication, he meant the losses to the economy will be mitigated; families who have lost loved one will soon find succor in the joy that gratitude brings and learn to value every relationship in their lives. He seems to see the bright spot.

He further outlined some of the new attitudes that the crisis will help build:

a. Toughness – Coming through almost 2 months of being kept at home while receiving daily news of half a thousand lives lost can be torturing. But Cuomo seeks at all cost to lift the mood of his people through his media engagements. Any Yankee who comes through this period unscathed must be strong enough to withstand the toughest of life’s challenges. Unfortunately, life demands toughness. Business demands toughness. Success demands toughness. However, no one build toughness on their terms. Toughness is forced upon us by the circumstances and adversities we brave.

b. Smart – In a world that is proving fragile. Both in protecting one’s health and scaling businesses, smartness is key. Smart people are analytical. They see into the future. They highlight risks. They prepare to seize opportunities for growth. Cuomo wants the citizens to see how the new experience will help the band of state executives and entrepreneurs mature in their responses to tough operating environment.

c. Discipline – Abiding by the state directives to ‘stay home to stay safe’ also has its advantages. It must have built the discipline and forbearance necessary to adhere to strategic plans. In business that is key for perfect execution on the route to building competitive market edge.

Andrew Cuomo’s insight is instructive for business owners going through bad times. Providing leadership for the workforce is key to keeping confidence from sagging when the economy reopens. Leaders don’t drop their heads during tough times. However, hard hit, they forget their pain and rise to motivate others to keep morale high.
