Leadership is fast becoming the bane of Nigeria. This is the submission of Senator Ajibola Bashiru, who spoke recently at a public lecture organized by UNIOSUN on the school campus . During the lecture, themed “Leadership in a decadent Society: Treading the Solitary Path”, the Senator representing Osun Central Senatorial District said Nigerian needs to review its leadership structure, and the process of selecting or electing people into public offices.

Among the guest speakers, at the lecture, are the former NUC boss, Professor Peter Okebukola, OFR; Chancellor of the University, Apostle Dr Mrs Alakija; Former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Professor Is-haq Oloyede; Pioneer Vice-Chancellor of Osun State University, Professor Sola Akinrinade, FNAL; Former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Professor Olufemi Bamiro; Former Registrar of the University of Ibadan, Chief Mrs Mojisola Ladipo, mni; Professor Godwin Kowero; Professor Abiodun Alao; Professor Janice Olawoye; Engineer Remi Bello; Hon. Abdullahi Binuyo among others.

According to the Senate Spokesperson, “the process of selection, the process of attainment of leadership is absolutely flawed and that is why it is very important for us to encourage people of goodwill, intellectual and sagacity, and uncommon morality to get engaged in our political sphere.”

“If we did not engage in politics we will end up being ruled by those who are lesser than us and they will take us to where don’t want.” He added.

Meanwhile, former NUC Boss, Professor Peter Okebukola who connected virtually said the essence of the lecture is to remind ourselves the attributes of a decadent society and how a leader is expected to make effort in transforming better governance.

He urged that if the National Universities Commission (NUC) should award any leader on a stable leadership role and developmental agenda then Professor Labode Popoola and Professor Is-haq Oloyede should be considered as best fit.

The Chancellor of the institution, Apostle Dr. Folorunsho Alakija maintained that there is corruption in every part of Nigeria, and has invaded our county in extreme.
“Corruption is not limited to government officials but our institutions are also part if this menace of corruption. Our youth have lost hope in the country as a result of corruption, and they are looking for every opportunity to leave the shore of our land.”
Speaking on the same topic, the Chief Executive of Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Is-haq Oloyede noted that a decadent would produce a decadent leadership.
In his words, “When a decadent society is allowed to appoint a leader, the possibility is very high that they will appoint a decadent leader.”
The speakers, management, staff, and students of the University thereby wish the Vice-chancellor, Professor Labode Popoola long life and prosperity
