Twitter, one of the top 3 social media platforms in the world, is being positioned as a revenue-generating tool with potential for creating jobs for young people, especially in Nigeria. One of the members of the board at Twitter Inc., Mrs. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, therefore advises youths in Africa’s largest market to take full advantage of the opportunities available on the popular media.

Okonjo Iweala was speaking today at the African University of Science and Technology (AUST) in Abuja, during the visit of Jack Dorsey, Twitter’s Chief Executive Officer. According to the ex-finance minister, social media can serve as a veritable tool for enterprise development and eradication of issues such as gender inequality.

She said, “Nigeria has one of the most dynamic young entrepreneurs in Africa and today,  the CEO of twitter is in Nigeria for the first time in Africa. Apart from using this platform for socialization, I urge young people to use it to create jobs for themselves and for others”.

She added, “Jack is interested in entrepreneurship and not just using twitter as a platform to create jobs.  We have example of young Nigerians who have platforms in which they go from village to village providing things that the people cannot get from government. That is why we wanted him to come to Nigeria so he can do things for the youth. Apart from creating jobs, Twitter can be used to address social problems,  gender and social justice issues,”

Jack Dorsey who was also in UNILAG earlier in the day, however said he is visiting Nigeria to learn from its teeming young people and find a way to work with them to create innovative solutions that will help tackle key problems in the country.
