In a bid to meet its 2020 target, MTN Nigeria has begun trial of 5G technology. The telecommunications service provider in partnership with the Ministry of Communication & Digital Economy, the Nigerian Communications Commission, Huawei Technology and Ericson, launched the trial in the last week of November.

The launch event was held in Abuja, and was witnessed by the Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Ali Pantami, and other stakeholders.

The fifth generation technology, generally regarded as 5G, has an advanced latency as it sends data faster than 4G. China, the US, and South Korea have deployed 5G technology to some extent but are yet to cover the whole population. The technology is expected to boost economic activities via advanced digital possibilities and speed of text, graphic and video transfer.

MTN Nigeria said the launch of the technology represents a momentous achievement for Nigeria. According to the firm, “This is a historic moment for us as it means new possibilities for Nigeria and Nigerians. This innovation has definitely made us hungry for more.”

The Minister of Communications & Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Pantami, emphasised the importance of 5G in driving economic growth in Africa’s largest economy. His view was supported by the Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, who said the technology will drive machine and ultra latency applications in such a way that would impact the lives of Nigerian citizens as tasks are made easier and faster.
